Someone to Love

Photographer Cristina Nuñez began shooting self-portraits more than 20 years ago, unabashedly turning the lens on herself way before webcams and mobile phones with cameras made the format ubiquitous. Today she boldly declares she has a mission: transforming human suffering into art.

Her longtime expertise in photography, as well as experience teaching in prisons, mental health centers, art academies, companies and schools, led her to define a methodology which is now contained in a double book, "Someone To Love," edited by Private Space Books.

My exceptional person!!

The person that fits my realm of professionalism that is the most exceptional is Victoria Monsul. She was our latest speaker at one of the Hofstra Design lectures. It just so happened that she became more than just a presenter to me.
After her lecture presentation, we drove back to Brooklyn and spent an hour in traffic, getting to know each other. That went so well that we decided to go out to dinner!
We went to "Wild Ginger" on Bedford Ave. in Williamsburg, a vegan pan asian restaurant that is super well known. We were starving and wanted to keep talking so...

We spoke for another two hours! Victoria is amazing. She and I have a very rare connection; our energies flow, and this is rare for me. We think alike, have similar mindsets, pasts, views on life, etc.
It literally felt like we'd been best friends for years.

Victoria is currently the director of Wix Lounge in Manhattan. This job is very hectic and full of oppurtunities. Before she got this amazing gig, she had many jobs.
(Some by just ringing her bell ;) )

After graduating from Pratt Institute in 2007, she interned at Film Comapny Prodcution. Then, she was a design assistant for Centerpoint, a publicity fields intern for SONY, a photographer assistant for Jason Szenes, an assistant to contemporary artist Nir Hod, a creative coordinator for Mother Industries, a production assistant for Art + Commerce/IMG, an apprentice for Fleurs Bell, Freelance Jr Designer, and then an assistant manager to Silent Touch Productions. She did this all from 2003-2010. In seven years, she accumulated more expereince than some do in a life time!

Her presentation and our dinner conversation gave me added insight on how to become as professional and successful as her. A few points she had specifically were to stay focused, be authentic, show flexibility, and to not be afraid to make mistakes!

I know I've make a strong connection in New York City through Victoria and I'm lucky for that. But, I think it is more because we get along so well! I've made a new friend. I think Victoria Monsul is quite exquesite, intelligent, and a fantastic person and professional. Kisses Vicki ;)

VICTORIA MONSUL

On November 11, 2010, we had a guest lecture.
Victoria Monsul came to speak, and she was A DELIGHT!

She is 25 years old and she is currently the director of the Wix Lounge in Manhattan.

Her lecture was about the life in the creative professions after graduation, entilted "Life: Post Graduation"

Here are some things she spoke about:
important to be focused, be authentic, maintain integrity, but be selective.
benefits of degree: building confidence, visual orientation, creative exploration, the open door.
show flexibility at new job opportunities.

creative exploration.
along the way: life: education, experience many people, when in doubt listen and observe, politics exist everywhere!, failure is just as important as success, and without crisis there cannot be transformation.

Ziska Zun

Looks like i've stumbled upon a new tattoo idea, thanks to Ziska Zun!
mysticism and skeletons collide in a reykjavik designer and illustrator's work.
she illustrates, styles, designs, and it is artist! and all of her work blends the day of the dead icon, la calabera catrina, and elements of warrior princess.
her new exhibition is called "skulls & halos"

i love whiskey

This article caught my eye because it's about....WHISKEY.

The top 101 whiskeys to try before we die. How could I not take a peak?

Whiskey expert Ian Buxton wrote this book "101 Whiskies to Try before you die"

what a job title!

While some brands are accessible like the Macallan 10 and Makers Mark, more exclusive labels make the cut when Buxton feels they're worth the money, which includes Johnny Walker's Blue Label George V Edition and the surprisingly delicate Highland Park 40. All of this variety turns the book into a whisky-fueled journey through tasting these 101 whiskies into both a inspiring travel guide and an education in scotch, whisky, whiskey, bourbon, rye and new make spirit (whisky before it's been aged).

It's available in December on Amazon.

Airwaves

Iceland's biggest music festival!!!!

With NY CMJ taking place right now, it seems fitting to mention Iceland's version. The crazy shows, crowds, after-parties, and of course--the people. The outfits, the trends, and all the magical glory in between.
Like this hot bitch above.

Craig Thomas is a photographer that captured some of the best. Gallery.

ArtCrank

MY favorite has posted on Artcrank which is where artists align for a community poster festival celebrating bicycles!!!

Living in Brooklyn has made it so that I catch anything concerning bikes. Starting in Minneapolis three years ago, the Artcrank show was a quick, fun way to publicize local artists by inviting them to create posters about bike culture. Since then, the concept has spread all the way to Portland, SF, Des Moines, and even London.
This year it took place a couple days ago in Portland---serving free beer....

Can't wait for this fest to hit NY.
Talk about cult cyclists comin' out they cages.

Marker

Tom Sachs x Krink: Graffit's favorite marker reworked by one of art's favorite conceptual sculptors.
Tom Sachs does a lot of tagging and signing as part of his work, and is very particular about the pens he uses. He even as a personalized Sharpie! (For sale on his site.)

He has switched to Krink. Because he loved them so much, they collaborated!

The new collection includes a k-12 permanent paint marker (white out), black k-70 permanent ink marker, red k-77 red paint marker.

Limited edition of 100, sells online for $550.

Flash Clip

The paper clip is one of the greatest inventions of all time. It is simple, sleek, one smooth piece of metal.
And yet, it has been improved. By Arman Emami.
It is a flash drive AND a clip!! It was designed for Verbatim. They come in a variety of colors, and hold 2-4 GB. I don't see any prices yet. But, keep a look out for Clip-It.

Traces + Logo

This is my logo design for the indoor gardener, seen in previous posts. I used the symbol for Shinto (Japan), the feet of the tree frog (Costa Rica), and the top of an ornate cross (Italy).
Not only with the shapes did I derive an image, but also with the names/words. I call it CRINKY. get it

Given my obsession with watches...

I must post this:
Core77 posted about the latest in WATCH SAFES.
However, Issey Miyake's Fuseproject-designed VUE watch, soon to be launched, eschews the safe by neatly hiding it within its very packaging--in the form of a tear-off notepad.

I have a watch collection, only 2 are really expensive, but if I ever get a spare chunk of change in my mansion, this seems to be a perfect addition.

New Fave

Looks like I have a new favorite graphic designer....
Heard the name before, but never really checked out his work extensively.
This may be silly, but, James Victore is the shiz.

I rediscovered him because of the arrival of his new book, "Victore or, Who died and made you Boss?" (which is $40).

He's got illustrations and catchy slogans. All with this horror comedy, that I am constantly attracted to. He mainly does poster, but also dives in surfboards and watches and book-covers.
He teaches at the School of Visual Arts.
I needa creep dat.

Stem Garden Notes Cont.

Any countries notorious for indoor planting?????
Italy? France?
Bamboo is popular in Southeast and East Asia, Argentina, and Chile.

Stem Garden Notes

Branding Research

Create a 100 word (in total) series of bullet points, listing the results of research you do into the current state of branding. Use the web as your source and do not use any source more than 2 years old. Credit sources and use links and Images.

---------

Summary: All the indoor gardeners I found online have similar, boring shapes. They are box-y, tupperware-ish, and unshapely for something that is supposed to be decorative and attractive. An indoor garden is meant to be appealing, and it shouldn't just be the flowers and plants job. The container should help! That's why I choose The Stem Garden; it's unique style and shape (like a flight fixture) is functional and funky.

Research:

We see what Quirky has to say about the new "Stem Garden." Other items like this:

Mini Gardener Stacker

The mini garden stacker is the perfect option for growing your seeds indoors. The stacking design takes minimal space and allows you to grow multiple different types of plants simultaneously. The garden stacker can be rolled in and out of the house to make it an all weather planter. Great for windowsills, decks, counter tops and balconies. A great choice when space is at a premium.

  • Self watering!
  • Indoor or outdoor
  • 9 or more plant types at once
  • Can be hung with included chain
  • 1 year warranty
  • 3 different colors available
  • UV protected plastic

Indoor gardening is now made easy with AeroGarden. Grow flowers, herbs, veggies, and more...all indoors! Its fully automated with built-in grow lights. The full spectrum grow bulb delivers all the light the plants need and the Plug & Grow seed pods produce healthy plants. Just add water and the control panel turns lights on/off and reminds you to add nutrients. No dirt, no weeds, no mess and no green thumb needed. Great for family chefs, cooking enthusiasts, healthy eaters, and aspiring gardeners.

to grow virtually any plant indoors -- all year long! Just add any seed of your choice to the nutrient rich grow sponge, water, and enjoy. The Power Plant™ is the perfect growing environment and doesn't use any soil - a nutrient rich solution is sprayed directly on the root system. Plants save energy in this way and grow in a moist, super-oxygenated environment - often growing larger than when planted in soil. Kit measure a window-sill friendly 9" W x 7" H x 3" D and includes 2 plant nutrients, 2 grow sponges, 3 humidadomes, 12-volt power supply, pump, seed cover and an instruction booklet. One year warranty.

Shape Ideas

Wine Carrier

-----------
Going with the stem garden.
It is an elegant indoor/outdoor planting system, influenced by champagne flutes.
In addition, Stem Garden features:

- Bendable goose-neck “stems” that allow you to position your plants most effectively for direct sunlight, without moving the entire unit.
- Removable terra-cotta cups, for easy planting and maintenance.
- Removable terra-cotta drip pan, which allows for easy disposal of excess water.
- Internal overflow protection system that allows excess water to drip down the removable planter cups through the stem into the included drip pan (subject to further design feasibility review).

This product will also come with an easy-to-use herb starter kit, with a variety of seeds and a set of simple instructions.

WTF

Gizmodo isn't saying much about this, only a couple sentences and the main event--these pictures. (CLICK)

It's 31st century New York City. A superstructure on TOP of it. Different levels of a road/subway system looking thing that is dedicated to have MORE shopping, eating, and fun. Because, what is down below, in real NY?

Looks like its called "Spatial City"

TINY flash!

A company called LaCie has created the tiniest USB flash drive. ever.
It is called MosKeyto.

It is so small, it basically fits all the way into the computer.
The first one out holds 8 GB! ($17.99)
(The 16 GB is coming soon for $27.99.)

It extends only 6 mm out of you laptop, measures less than 20 mm and weighs 10 grams. And you can secure online storage with Wuala included.
